Glenn Powell has been practicing employment and contract law for more than thirty years as well as mediation and arbitration for over twenty. The major focus of his work has been preventive law, policy development, independent investigations, and dispute resolution. He has counseled business owners, leaders, managers, HR professionals, and employees on a full range of employment law, employee relations, HR administration, and contract issues. His work has included drafting, training, and implementing policies, codes of ethics and conduct, employee handbooks, investigative procedures, incentive plan and commission agreements, employment and separation agreements, as well as successful resolution of issues related to discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliation, wage/hour, contract interpretation and compliance, HR policy interpretation and compliance, incentive compensation, FMLA leaves, disability insurance, severance pay, drug testing, workplace violence, theft/embezzlement, disciplinary action, and termination.
With extensive dispute resolution expertise, Glenn has effectively conducted hundreds of internal investigations of discrimination, harassment, retaliation and employee misconduct claims against management and employees, including several hundred discrimination complaints filed with state FEP agencies and EEOC offices throughout the country. He also has handled wage complaints and on-site investigations pursued by the U.S. and various state Departments of Labor as well as OFCCP on-site investigations. Additionally, Glenn has appeared in arbitration hearings and litigated matters in state and U.S. District Court. As a neutral, Glenn has arbitrated and mediated numerous employment and contract cases for profit (Fortune 500, publicly and closely held companies in addition to start-ups across financial, healthcare, hospitality, insurance, manufacturing, and retail sectors), not-for-profit (healthcare providers), and governmental entities including school districts.
Prior to joining The Human Resource Consortium’s team, Glenn focused on the practices of employment and contract law as well as ADR including roles as Partner, Mayo, Gilligan & Zito, LLP where he started and led their employment law practice and Counsel, Aetna Life & Casualty where he handled employment and corporate law needs as an internal expert.
Glenn earned his Juris Doctor degree from Cornell Law School. Previously, he completed his B.A. at Hofstra University with dual majors in Mathematics and in Economics, graduating magna cum laude, as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and was selected as the Outstanding Department of Mathematics Student in his graduating class. He is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association Labor and Employment Section and has presented to Bar Association groups on the topic of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Additionally, Glenn is a member of the American Arbitration Association’s Panel of Arbitrators, Connecticut Education Arbitration Board’s Panel of Neutral Arbitrators, and Electric Boat’s Panel of Mediators and Panel of Arbitrators for its Voluntary Dispute Resolution Process. A believer in giving back to his community, Glenn has provided pro bono support to the Legal Aid Society of Hartford and for the Town of Canton and is a volunteer, Special Mediator for the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. Additionally, he has served on the Board of Directors for the Canton Chamber of Commerce and Town of Canton Parks & Recreation Commission.
