Michael Butler, JD, MA, MS
Human Resource Management and Benefits Practice Leader
Michael Butler is a Human Resource Management and Benefits Practice Leader for The Human Resource Consortium. He is an expert in health care policy and all aspects of human capital management, with particular depth in employee benefits and executive compensation. He is an exceptionally accomplished Chief HR Officer and Total Rewards executive, and experienced Member of Boards of Directors including a hospital foundation, industry HR association, and community arts organization. In addition to his significant wisdom from broad HR leadership and consulting experience, Mike brings a pragmatic and thoughtful approach with a multi-lens perspective to his work with organizations and their leaders.
As a Chief HR Officer, Mike was most recently Managing Director & CHRO for ProShares Group (issuer of exchange-traded funds) where he guided the organization through the Covid pandemic and worked closely with the founder/CEO to rebuild the leadership team and prepare for the next phase of the organization’s development. Prior to that, he served as Managing Director and Chief HR Officer for Point72 Asset Management (hedge fund), where he played a key role in fundamentally reinventing the organization (leadership team, management structure, culture, rewards, professional development, and more), ultimately spurring it to robust health in the aftermath of an existential crisis. Earlier in his career he held positions as VP HR (CHRO) for Ensign Bickford Industries, SVP HR of Cablevision, and VP Compensation & Benefits for ToysRUs. Prior to his HR executive roles, Mike was a Managing Consultant, Practice Leader & Principal for Hewitt Associates, practiced employment and healthcare law as an associate at Epstein Becker & Green, and served as Assistant Director of Medical Services & Governmental Affairs for the American Society of Internal Medicine.
With a passionate commitment to continuous learning and a deep interest in healthcare policy, in 2022 Mike earned a Master of Science degree in Health Economics (with Distinction) from the London School of Economics and Political Science as well as a Master in Arts degree in Healthcare Public Policy from the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. His prior educational background includes completion of the Future CHRO Executive Education Program at Cornell University’s Industrial & Labor Relations School, a Juris Doctorate from Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in American Studies with a concentration in Labor History from Georgetown University.
In addition to his full-time roles, Mike has served as an Advisor to Next Gen Nutrition Investment Partners (investor in early stage food and beverage disrupters), as well as a Member of the Board of Directors for Stamford Hospital Foundation, The Ridgefield Playhouse, and the Cable and Telecommunications HR Association.
